The furniture and handicraft industry, as one of the labor-intensive leading industries in Indonesia, has made significant contributions to the national economy. HIMKI is a specialized organization of enterprise members in the furniture and handicraft industry in Indonesia. Its headquarters is located in Jakarta, and its branches are spread across various production bases in the Indonesian archipelago, especially Java Island, which is the largest cluster. The furniture and handicraft products produced are diverse, including: wooden furniture, rattan furniture, metal furniture, plastic/synthetic furniture, furniture components, as well as handicrafts and home decorations made of various mixed materials.
HIMKI currently has 16 regional management committees (abbreviated as DPD), distributed across Java Island, Sumatra Island, Sulawesi Island, Beibu Gulf Island and Bali Island. The members of HIMKI currently consist of over 2,500 industrial companies and export traders, among which large companies account for 20%, medium-sized companies for 40%, and small companies for 40%. The future goal of the association is to export to 120 countries around the world.
HIMKI was established on the basis of authorization from two associations (AMKRI) and (ASMINDO). The merger was explained in the Memorandum (MoU) signed by both parties at the Aryaduta Hotel in Jakarta on April 20, 2016. HIMKI was unveiled in Jakarta on May 31, 2016, witnessed directly by the Minister of Industry and Trade of Jakarta. The strong alliance of the two major associations will promote the furniture and handicrafts industry to have strong competitiveness in both domestic and foreign markets.
The merger of AMKRI and ASMINDO to form the HIMKI symposium was under the instruction of President Joko Widodo, with the aim of promoting the healthy and rapid development of the furniture and handicrafts industry in both domestic and export markets. As an enterprise association of the furniture and handicrafts industry, HIMKI is well aware of its responsibility to promote harmonious cooperation, encourage the equal distribution of business opportunities, and participate in the implementation of the development of the national economic sector. Members of HIMKI share a common vision, mission and goal, and they will jointly promote a bright future for the furniture and handicrafts industry!
Manufacturing Center
The concentration of furniture enterprises in East Java ranks second in Indonesia. The concentrated furniture factories have made Surabaya the manufacturing center of East Java. Most of the furniture enterprises around are located in the areas surrounding the exhibition venue, which will greatly enhance the convenience and efficiency of industry visitors' visits. Sura-baya, the capital of East Java Province, is the second largest city in Indonesia. It is located in the east of Java Island and is one of the regions with the highest level of economic development in Indonesia. Surabaya has Tanjung Perak, the largest port in Indonesia, and Juanda Intemational Airport, the second largest airport in Indonesia
It ranked 193rd on the 2019 list of the world's top 500 cities.
Labour force
The labor wages and land development prices in East Java are much lower than those in West Java, which has led furniture manufacturing enterprises to move eastward from the west. The relocation of enterprises from the western region has gradually expanded the scale of the furniture industry in Sishui and enhanced its influence. Meanwhile, the expansion of the factory building scale of the relocated enterprises will imply a demand for the purchase of production machinery.
Government incentive measures
The Indonesian government has attracted foreign direct investment in the industrial park in East Java by offering incentives such as tax breaks, subsidies and reducing regulatory fees. In addition, the government has invested funds in 2024 to enhance the value chain of the wood and furniture industry, promoting improvements in production efficiency and product quality.
Therefore, to provide support for the development of the furniture industry in East Java, The Indonesian Furniture and Handicrafts Association (HIMKI), Singapore PABLO Publishing and Exhibition Co., Ltd. and PT Dyandra Promosindo are honored to jointly hold the first Indonesian Woodworking Machinery and Furniture Raw Materials Exhibition (INDO WOODEXPO 2025) with wine and spirits.
